Protect Old Cherry Hills and Greenwood Village: Oppose the Traffic Light
The Issue
Of the utmost importance is the safety of our families, the security of our homes and the serenity of our neighborhoods. Old Cherry Hills and Greenwood Village are not just residential areas; they are sanctuaries from the bustling city life, filled with families, children playing and neighbors who know each other by name. The installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Franklin Street and Belleview Avenue would shift traffic from State Highway 88 / Belleview onto our local streets and would fundamentally alter our neighborhoods.
We live in quiet neighborhoods in which the lack of sidewalks and street lighting adds to the unique charm and tranquility of our community. However, many of our neighbors and children rely on our streets for pedestrian activities, and the installation of a traffic light at Belleview and Franklin threatens safety.
The introduction of a new traffic light at this intersection is expected to significantly increase cut-through traffic, posing a greater risk to the safety of pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly, who frequently use our streets as activity loops. Increased traffic will escalate the safety situation at the Highline Canal crossing on Franklin Street – frequented by horses, bikers, pets and people young and old. Historical and empirical evidence supports that vehicles will choose our residential streets as shortcuts, further encroaching on the calm and secure environment we have cultivated and maintained over the years.
Moreover, it's important to note that municipalities across the country have reported similar issues where traffic lights inadvertently lead to a rise in cut-through traffic in surrounding residential areas. Various studies highlight the negative impact on community safety particularly for pedestrians, noise levels, and overall quality of life. Although no local impact studies have been completed, it is reasonable that the addition of another traffic light along State Highway 88 could create additional congestion at the intersection of Belleview and University.
We urge the local authorities to consider alternative traffic management solutions that do not compromise the safety of pedestrians and residents within our neighborhoods.
Please join us in OPPOSING the installation of the traffic light at Belleview and Franklin by signing this petition. Every signature counts to keep our neighborhood safe and serene for all its residents so please make sure to HAVE YOUR SPOUSE SIGN and SHARE WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS in Greenwood Village and Cherry Hills Village. Time is of the essence.
