The Issue

For more than 20 years, SNAP-Education (SNAP-Ed) funding has helped Philadelphia students build lifelong healthy habits through hands-on nutrition education, school gardens, cooking experiences, physical activity initiatives, and family food access programs through a program fondly known as Eat Right Philly. These programs do far more than teach students about healthy eating—they improve readiness to learn, connect children to fresh food and nature, support teachers, strengthen school communities, and help families access nutritious food.

Now, that progress is at risk.

Due to the elimination of Pennsylvania SNAP-Ed funding, these programs are ending in the School District of Philadelphia. Without immediate action, schools across the city will lose dedicated nutrition educators, school garden support, wellness programming, and partnerships that have taken decades to build.

This is not just the loss of a grant—it is the loss of an essential investment in Philadelphia's children.

We are calling on Philadelphia City Council, local healthcare institutions, philanthropic foundations, corporate partners, and community leaders to work together to establish bridge funding that preserves these vital programs while sustainable long-term funding solutions are developed.

By protecting this infrastructure, Philadelphia can continue to provide:

  • Hands-on nutrition education and food literacy
  • School gardens and farm-to-school learning experiences
  • Physical activity and school wellness initiatives
  • Family food access partnerships and nutrition resources
  • Healthier, more equitable learning environments for every student

Philadelphia has already invested years in building healthier schools and stronger communities. We cannot afford to lose this momentum.

Sign this petition to urge City Council and our philanthropic community to act now. Together, we can ensure that every Philadelphia student continues to have access to the nutrition education, gardens, and wellness opportunities they deserve.

Update from the Office of Deputy Majority Whip Cindy Bass City Council is in charge of passing the Mayor's Budget every year. My office will continue to monitor this issue and advocate for the health, well-being, and educational needs of Philadelphia students. We recognize the value of nutrition education, school gardens, and hands-on opportunities that help students develop healthy habits early in life. We understand the concerns raised by families, educators, and community members about maintaining these programs in Philadelphia schools. Nutrition education and school-based wellness initiatives can be important tools in supporting student health and academic success. My office is seeking additional information about the status of these programs and any proposed changes before taking a position on specific next steps. We will continue to engage with the relevant School District leadership and community stakeholders as more information becomes available. Constituents are encouraged to continue sharing their concerns and experiences with our office so that we can ensure they are reflected in the ongoing conversation. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to raise this issue and advocate for Philadelphia students.
