Protect Nesting Birds at Pecanwood Estate: Delay Tree Removals Until the Right Time

The Issue

We call on Pecanwood Estate and General Manager Urby Ueckermann to delay the removal of palm trees until the bird nesting season has concluded, focusing only on the high-risk palm trees after this period. While we commend the estate’s plan to replace palms with indigenous species and address fire risks, the current timing threatens the survival of birds relying on these trees for nesting and rest.

As a resident who values the unique environment of Pecanwood Estate, I have seen firsthand how these trees provide essential habitats for our local and migratory bird populations. BirdLife South Africa has raised serious concerns about the devastating impact this removal could have, especially for species already under threat due to habitat loss and climate challenges.

The estate’s own Environmental Management Plan (EMP) commits to protecting biodiversity and increasing bird habitats. Yet, this decision to proceed during nesting season contradicts those commitments. As someone who enjoys watching these birds in their natural habitat, it breaks my heart to think of the unnecessary harm caused by this poorly timed action.

Despite these concerns, Mr. Ueckermann has cited liability over potential fire risks as the reason for immediate tree removal, disregarding the wildlife that depend on these trees. By limiting removals to high-risk palms after nesting season and conducting inspections to avoid disturbing active nests, the estate can still address safety concerns while respecting its environmental obligations.

We urge Pecanwood Estate to:

Postpone all tree removals until the nesting season ends, addressing only high-risk palms thereafter.
Conduct thorough inspections to confirm the absence of active nests before removal.
Accelerate indigenous tree planting to provide replacement habitats.
Align all actions with the EMP and collaborate with BirdLife South Africa to preserve biodiversity.
Pecanwood Estate is situated in the Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve, a unique and vital area for both local and migratory birds. I believe we have a responsibility to lead by example, balancing human safety with the protection of our precious wildlife. Taking these steps ensures liability concerns are addressed without compromising the estate’s environmental commitments.

This issue is personal to me because I have always cherished the estate’s natural beauty and the joy of seeing birds nesting in these palm trees. Let’s protect what makes Pecanwood so special. Together, we can make a difference.
