Protect Native Americans From ICE Harassment

Protect Native Americans From ICE Harassment
The Issue
Native Americans are being stopped, detained, and forced to prove their right to belong in their own country.
Across the United States, Indigenous people report being questioned and harassed by ICE because of how they look. Many now feel compelled to carry tribal IDs and citizenship documents at all times—out of fear, not choice.
This is unacceptable.
Native Americans are U.S. citizens. They are the first people of this land. No one should be treated as suspicious or detained because of their race, ethnicity, or appearance.
Tribal leaders, civil rights advocates, and affected families warn that ICE actions are causing widespread fear—especially among elders, children, and urban Native communities. Some tribes have already taken extraordinary steps to protect their members, including banning ICE from reservations.
The federal government must act.
We are calling on the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to immediately:
- End racial profiling of Native Americans
- Issue clear guidance protecting enrolled tribal citizens from questioning and detention
- Recognize tribal IDs as valid proof of identity and citizenship nationwide
- Investigate and stop unlawful detentions of Native Americans
No one should have to carry papers to prove they belong—especially the first people of this country.
