The Issue

My name is Jacquel L, and I'm writing this with a heavy heart from Killeen, Texas. My sister Serenity Baker was only 14 years old when she was tragically murdered at school—a loss that has left an indescribable void in our family. To honor her memory, we initially placed a memorial at the school, but it was taken down. Devastated yet determined to keep her memory alive, we created another memorial closer to our home, a spot my mother can visit whenever she misses her beloved child.

However, we've now been informed that the city plans to take this memorial down too. It rests peacefully on a fence, not obstructing anyone or anything. It stands as a quiet but powerful reminder of a life taken too soon and serves as a source of comfort and solace for us, the victims of this terrible event. The mere thought of seeing my sister’s name disappear yet again is unbearable.

From the tragic moment of her death, we have felt more like suspects than victims. But in truth, we are mourning the loss of an innocent life, forever altered by violence and grief. The city council must recognize the importance of this memorial and the profound emotional and psychological benefits it provides to grieving families like ours.

Our request is simple: let my sister's memorial stand. It means everything to us, and removing it strips away a vital source of healing and remembrance that our family desperately needs. No bureaucratic decision should obliterate our ongoing journey of coping with grief and loss.

We appeal to the community of Killeen, Texas, to rally behind us and show your support for our family. Help us uphold the memory of a beautiful young girl who deserves to be remembered, not erased.

Please sign this petition to stop the city from taking my sister's memorial down. Your support can make all the difference for our family and help us maintain this sacred tribute in her honor. Thank you for your compassion and solidarity during our darkest times.
