Community dogs have lived around Mumbai's railway stations for years. They are part of these neighbourhoods, cared for by local residents, vendors and animal lovers. The overwhelming majority are harmless and simply trying to survive.

Western Railway has announced measures to prevent dogs from entering station premises. While passenger safety is important, these measures must not become a justification for removing, relocating or mistreating healthy community dogs.

Scientific evidence and India's Animal Birth Control framework recognise that removing community dogs from their territories does not provide a lasting solution. 

Vacated areas are often repopulated by other unsterilised dogs, while sterilisation, vaccination, responsible waste management and community engagement are the proven long-term approach.
We urge Western Railway to adopt a One Health approach by prioritising humane Animal Birth Control (ABC), mass anti-rabies vaccination, responsible waste management, improved station infrastructure, veterinary partnerships, and community engagement instead of indiscriminate removal or displacement of community dogs.

Our demand
* No removal or relocation of healthy community dogs from their established territories except where permitted under applicable law (such as for sterilisation, vaccination or treatment).
