Protect Mount Cotton
The issue
* Updated *
Today, it is a peaceful rural landscape near to our primary school, we have working farms and access to fresh locally grown food. There's endangered species in our waterways and bushland, not to mention the wildlife habitat.
The Queensland Government is currently reviewing the ShapingSEQ 2023 Update and considering changes to the South East Queensland Regional Plan.
As part of this process, Redland City Council has passed a motion to provide in principle support that land in Mount Cotton be considered for inclusion within the Urban Footprint.
The Queensland Government is currently considering submissions from councils, landowners, community members and other stakeholders before determining whether any changes should occur.
This is the community's opportunity to have its voice heard.
Why this matters
The land being considered currently contains:
-working farms and food production
-rural landscapes
-wildlife habitat and vegetation
-waterways supporting native species
-land near Mount Cotton State School
If this land were included within the Urban Footprint, it would become eligible to be considered for future urban development over time, subject to future planning processes and development assessment.
While any future development would still require additional planning approvals and community consultation where required by law, changing the Urban Footprint represents an important long-term planning decision that could significantly influence how this area changes over coming decades.
Once rural land is identified for future urban purposes, that strategic planning direction can be difficult to reverse.
What we're asking the Queensland Government to consider
We respectfully ask the Queensland Government to carefully consider whether this land provides greater long-term value by remaining rural.
In particular, we ask that the State consider:
• protecting productive agricultural land and local food production
• maintaining Mount Cotton's rural landscape and character
• protecting environmental values, waterways and wildlife habitat
• recognising the importance of land surrounding Mount Cotton State School
• ensuring that any future planning decisions reflect both community values and long-term sustainability.
Our Request
We ask the Queensland Government to:
Retain this land outside the Urban Footprint unless there is clear evidence that urban expansion is in the long-term public interest.
Recognise the strategic importance of preserving productive rural land within Redland City.
Ensure community values are given appropriate weight alongside housing and economic considerations when reviewing the Regional Plan.
Why your signature matters
The Queensland Government is currently accepting submissions as part of the Regional Plan review.
Every signature demonstrates that members of the community value Mount Cotton's rural character, environmental assets and agricultural land.
By signing this petition, you are asking the Queensland Government to carefully consider these values before making any decision about the future of this area.
Mount Cotton, a quiet, green community could be lost forever.
This motion was rushed through and passed without local consultation, with the council lobbying the state government to rewrite the South East Queensland (SEQ) Regional Plan.
If they change the lines on a map, We, the local community, pay the price!
Protect the Last Remaining Farmland: With only a handful of working, food producing farms left in the Redlands, we ask the state government to protect what is left, our farming heritage and save our agricultural land for the future generations to work, live and enjoy.
Sign this. Send it to every Redlands resident who wants to keep Mount Cotton green.
