Protect Michigan's Clean Energy Law

The Issue

Three years ago, Michigan made a promise to its residents: 100 percent clean energy by 2040. It was one of the strongest commitments any state had ever made to cut pollution, lower long-term energy costs, and build a more reliable grid. Now, Michigan House Republicans are trying to erase it.

On May 12, 2026, the Michigan House passed HB 5710 and HB 5711 — a two-bill package that would eliminate the state's clean and renewable energy standards, gut energy waste reduction targets, and strip environmental justice protections from utility planning. The bills now head to the Michigan Senate.

The case for repeal doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Michigan's two largest utilities — DTE Energy and Consumers Energy — have both said their plans to meet clean energy targets will not require a surcharge for ratepayers. Renewable energy is now among the cheapest new power sources available. And the 2023 law already gives utilities flexibility to use a mix of resources, including nuclear power and natural gas with carbon capture, to meet the standard.

Rolling back these laws won't lower your bill. It will lock Michigan into the same fossil fuel price swings that are already driving volatility in global energy markets — and undo years of progress on reducing the pollution driving climate change.

We're calling on the Michigan Senate to reject HB 5710 and HB 5711. Don't undo what Michigan worked hard to build. Hold the line on clean energy.
