Dear Supporters,
I wanted to share a recent development with you regarding our campaign to improve pedestrian safety on Duke Street. Transport for NSW has confirmed that they will permanently reduce the speed limit on Duke Street and surrounding roads. This is a welcome step forward and shows that our collective voices are being heard.
However, while this change is encouraging, it does not go far enough. Speed limit signs alone will not ensure safety, especially when current speed limits are already not consistently respected by motorists. Enforcing speed limits remains a major challenge.
That’s why we must continue to push for the installation of a physical safety measure, such as a speed hump or pedestrian traffic lights—like those installed near the school in Plumpton after a tragic incident.
Thank you for your continued support and please keep sharing the petition. Every signature helps strengthen our call for real, life-saving change.
Below is the full message from Transport for NSW for your reference:
Dear Zaheed,
Transport for NSW will permanently reduce speed limits on several roads in your area to improve road safety for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
A speed limit review of Duke Street was prompted by requests from Blacktown City Council, local police, and members of the public. As a result of this review, the speed limit will be permanently reduced along Duke Street and part of Woodstock Avenue, Luxford Road and Railway Street. Increased signage and line marking will alert drivers to stop for pedestrians improving safety.
This review follows the Speed Zoning Standard and will improve road safety by reducing the risk of incidents. Lowering the speed limit may add around 23 seconds to your trip along Duke Street.
We will install signage and pavement marking from Tuesday 13 to Tuesday 20 May, weather permitting. We will work no more than two nights per week on Wednesday and Thursday night, weather permitting.
Day work hours are 7am to 6pm Sunday to Friday and night work hours are 8pm to 5am. We will not work on Saturdays or public holidays.
Our work includes replacing speed limit signage and pavement markings on Duke Street between Woodstock Ave and Luxford Road and Railway Street. The work also includes painting zig zag line markings on both approaches to the existing zebra crossing on Duke Street.
Variable Message Signs will be in place for one week before installation and one week after.
