Protect learners around Radley Private School: Install speed bumps and Traffic Circles now
The Issue
We, the concerned parents, residents, teachers, learners and community members of Ferndale, request Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) & Ward Councillor for Randburg to install traffic calming measures — including speed bumps and traffic circles — around Radley Private School (Oxford Street & Elgin Avenue, Randburg).
The safety of our children is our primary concern. The absence of adequate traffic control measures such as speed bumps or traffic circles makes the daily commute in Oxford Street and Elign Avenue fraught with danger. The roads surrounding Radley Private High and Primary schools are heavily trafficked, and drivers often exceed safe speed limits and take unnecessary risks, putting our young learners at risk.
In the last year there have been many numerous accidents in Oxford Street, which could have been prevented with adequate traffic control measures in place. Once such incident nearly claimed the life of one of Radley's learners when a driver turned in front of him, and another saw a vehicle go straight through one of our neighbour's yards due to a driver taking an unnecessary risk to turn into Oxford Street.
These streets see high traffic volumes during drop-off and pick-up times, often leading to:
- Congestion and blocked intersections,
- Vehicles speeding through school zones,
- Danger to pedestrians, particularly young learners
- Unsafe and unregulated intersections.
To protect our children (as well as other road users) and reduce potential harm, we propose:
- Speed bumps in at least 6 locations near school entrances,
- Traffic circles in 3 key intersections with Oxford Street (Vale Avenue, Vine Avenue and York Avenue) to manage traffic flow and reduce accidents.
Traffic circles are proven to minimize fatal accidents, enhance pedestrian safety, and improve the flow of traffic, while speed bumps will help prevent speeding and prevent accidents.
Additionally, the South African Department of Transport emphasizes the importance of traffic calming in urban areas densely populated with schools. More than just infrastructure, these measures are a commitment to our children's safety and well-being.
We implore the Johannesburg Road Agency to prioritize the sections of Oxford Street and Elign Avenue adjoining Radley Private School in their upcoming plans.
Please support this cause by signing and sharing this petition. Let's spur the Johannesburg Roads Agency into action and create safer roads for our learners and community.
