Protect LAUSD School Mental Health Positions

The Issue

This is an URGENT CALL TO ACTION! Superintendent Carvalho is eliminating and reducing critical School Mental Health Social Work Positions for the 2023-2024 school year, which will significantly impact the mental health services that social workers provide at schools and to the district. The need for mental health services/social emotional support is at an all-time high and while Carvahlo claims to care about the health and wellness of LAUSD students, he is quietly eliminating and reducing critical mental health supports that are desperately needed. The CC&S team, who provide essential services including clinical supervision, quality assurance, trainings, and hiring is being dismantled. The Mental Health Consultants who provide crisis support and guidance to schools and school social workers are being reduced, forcing consultants to compete for a small handful of positions or opt for reduced salaries with lower paying positions. There will be a reduction in staff manning the Wellness Hotline that provides resources and support to school staff, students, and families. Kindergarten Readiness, SMH clinic, TRiEE, and ERIC's PSW's positions are also being reduced/cut, and central district funding for school-based PSWs is being decreased from full-time to part-time. This is not only negligent, but an absolute disservice to the students and families served. School Mental Health needs to be prioritized, fully staffed, and properly funded by LAUSD as part of Carvalho's strategic plan. Please help to show how important School Mental Health support is to LAUSD students by signing and sharing this petition and calling and emailing Carvalho and school board members, who stand by as the superintendent continues to disregard the needs of LAUSD's most important stakeholders.
