Protect Kids — Enforce Proper Sentences and Deportation for Child Predators

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned by the recent case of Akashkumar Narendrakumar Khant, an Indian engineer in Ontario who was convicted of attempting to solicit sex from a 15-year-old but was spared both jail time and deportation. This lenient ruling has shocked many and raises serious questions about fairness and the consistent application of Canadian law.

Under Canadian law, such offenses normally warrant custodial sentences, and non-citizens convicted of serious crimes typically face deportation. However, as highlighted by legal experts and public commentators, including Jamie Sarkonak in the National Post, there is a troubling trend where judges reduce sentences for non-citizen offenders to avoid deportation, effectively giving them a “sentence discount” that NOBODY - citizen or non citizen - should receive - especially for this type of crime. This undermines the principles of justice and equality before the law.

We call on the Minister of Justice and relevant authorities to:

Ensure offenders convicted of crimes like child luring receive appropriate jail sentences, consistent with the Criminal Code of Canada. Enforce immigration laws that mandate deportation for non-citizen offenders convicted of serious crimes, to protect public safety and uphold the integrity of the legal system.
