Protect Jack's "Junkyard"

Protect Jack's "Junkyard"
The Issue
For decades, Jack Billings has operated a recycling center on Old Prater Road in Marion, Virginia, near the Fish Hatchery. In fact, this property has served as a recycling center since at least 1955. Recently, a small group of individuals in the area—likely due to misunderstandings about the nature of the business—have organized a petition asking the town council to end recycling operations at this long-standing location.
In response, and with no ill will toward anyone involved, we hope to demonstrate to the town council that many members of our community recognize the value of metal recycling and support the continuation of this operation.
It is important to understand what a recycling center truly does. While some people refer to them as “junkyards,” these facilities serve a much greater purpose. Car recycling and metal recovery play a vital role in protecting the environment and conserving valuable natural resources. When old or damaged vehicles arrive at a recycling center, usable parts are salvaged and materials such as steel, aluminum, and copper are recovered and recycled rather than sent to landfills. This process reduces waste, decreases the demand for new raw materials, and lowers the energy required to manufacture new products.
Additionally, vehicle recycling facilities operate under strict environmental regulations. They are closely overseen by the Department of Environmental Quality and must follow rigorous standards to properly remove and handle fluids and other materials, ensuring that soil and water remain protected. In short, responsible recycling centers help keep our environment clean, support the reuse of valuable materials, and provide jobs for hardworking members of our community.
This location has served our area in this capacity for more than seventy years. By signing this petition, you are showing support for responsible recycling, environmental stewardship, and a long-standing local business. Consider adding your name if you believe in recycling old materials into new ones, helping remove abandoned or non-functional vehicles from our community, and supporting a service that benefits both our town and our environment.
Your signature helps demonstrate that many residents value this operation and wish to see it continue serving Marion for years to come.
