In Iowa, a disturbing trend has emerged where registered and tagged pets are being unjustly killed by firearms. This heart-wrenching and senseless violence leaves families devastated, with their beloved pets becoming victims of malicious intent. As valued members of our families, pets contribute to our happiness, well-being, and provide us with unconditional love. It is our responsibility to protect them from harm and ensure their safety.

The problem is glaring. Instances of beloved pets being shot without provocation are increasingly reported, yet justice for these acts remains elusive. According to data from various local animal rights organizations, there has been a marked increase in such incidents over the past three years, causing not only emotional trauma but also fear among pet owners about the safety of their animals.

Many perpetrators escape with minor penalties, if any, which only emboldens them and others to commit similar offenses. This inadequacy in the system needs immediate addressing.

I am urging the Iowa State Legislature to take definitive action to protect our pets. This can be achieved by enacting laws that consider the killing of registered and tagged pets as a serious offense, ensuring that the penalties are severe enough to deter potential offenders. Implementing mandatory reporting of such incidents and thorough investigations will also ensure that justice is served.

This Petition I may add, is in remembrance of a young pup named Gunner of Denison, Iowa. Gunner was wrongfully killed cold blooded with a firearm with no rhyme or reasoning behind it. There were no warnings, no confrontations. Just bullets. Gunner was such a warm, compassionate, and loving companion! Please help me spread Gunners story, and bring him and his family the justice they deserve!
