Protect Inistioge’s Heritage and Health, Stop the Mega Turbines
The Issue
"Too Big, Too close"
We, the community of "Protect Inistioge’s Environment," are calling for an immediate halt to the proposed private wind farm development in Inistioge. While we support a transition to renewable energy, we cannot accept industrial-scale turbines standing 575feet tall (175m) —twice the height of standard turbines—located in our Heritage village, and just 700 metres from a heavily populated area of residential dwellings. This project, driven by private profit and intended for sale to the highest bidder, is being fast-tracked at a time when the Irish government has failed to provide up-to-date national regulations or legislation to deal with this influx of advanced, industrial-scale technology. Our cherished heritage village and rural landscape is at risk!
Inistioge is world-renowned as a "village straight from the movies," serving as a timeless location for Hollywood films like Circle of Friends.
This development threatens to:
Destroy Our Heritage: The industrialisation of our skyline will permanently end our status as a premier tourist and film destination.
Endanger Our Environment: Our wildlife and the delicate ecosystem of our river must not be sacrificed for a private firm’s short-term gain.
Affect our wells: We have serious concerns regarding the impact of deep-excavation construction on the Mount Alto water table. Dozens of residential homes in the immediate vicinity rely solely on private wells for their domestic water supply. The scale of the foundations required for 175m turbines risks diverting underground water veins, causing local wells to dry up, or worse, contaminating our drinking water with silt and construction chemicals.
Furthermore, as this project is a private development intended for sale to the highest bidder, we demand to know who carries the long-term legal and financial liability for our water security. If a well fails or becomes toxic two years after the 'flip' to an international investment fund, the community is left with no clear path for mitigation or compensation. We cannot allow our most basic human right, access to clean water be to be gambled for private profit.
We also remind the Council that any disruption to the Mount Alto hydrology also affects the runoff into the River Nore Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
Affect our Health: We are deeply concerned about the long-term impact of these mega-turbines on the physical and mental health of the Inistioge community. We formally object to this development on the grounds of significant risk to public health and the permanent loss of residential amenity. The proposed 175m turbines will subject families to Infrasound and Low-Frequency Noise (ILFN), which is known to cause sleep disturbance, chronic stress due to amplitude modulation and sleep disturbance. Solar sensors to reduce Shadow flicker are proving right now, not to work. We believe that the 'Precautionary Principle' must apply. It is reckless to permit structures of this unprecedented scale so close to homes while the Irish government's noise and setback guidelines remain 20 years out of date and unsuited for modern mega-turbine technology. Until independent, peer-reviewed medical studies prove that 175m turbines at a 700m distance do not cause cumulative health impacts, this project must be refused to protect the wellbeing of the Inistioge community.
Devalue Our Homes: Many residents now fear their homes will become unsellable, stripping families of their primary assets and security, putting at risk, the very life of Inistioge village.
