The Issue

On Monday, July 14th, 2025, my husband, a kind-hearted and responsible man from Brazil, was unjustly detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and held in the Plymouth County Correctional Facility in Massachusetts. Thankfully, he is no longer in ICE custody, and we have been reunited. However, the fear that he could be detained again and taken away from me at any moment continues to weigh heavily on our hearts.

My husband came to America with dreams, determination, and a strong desire to contribute positively to this country. He has always respected the law, worked hard to build a better future for us, and earned the love and admiration of everyone around him. His initial detention turned our lives upside down, and we still live with the trauma of that experience.

Although ICE’s role is to enforce immigration laws, detaining individuals like my husband—who pose no threat and have demonstrated integrity and commitment to our community—is an injustice. The fear of him being taken away again is unbearable and undermines the values of compassion and family unity that America stands for.

Brazilian immigrants represent an important part of the U.S. immigrant community. According to the Migration Policy Institute, there are over 500,000 Brazilian immigrants currently living in the United States, with the largest populations in states like Massachusetts, Florida, and New York. Many are employed in construction, hospitality, and service industries where they contribute significantly to local economies. Studies also show that approximately 1 in 10 Brazilian immigrants in the U.S. are married to American citizens, highlighting the deep ties they form within their communities. Nationally, U.S. Census data indicates that over 1.3 million U.S. citizens are married to immigrants. These families face unique challenges with immigration enforcement, often living with the constant fear of separation. Detaining individuals who are married to U.S. citizens and who have established community roots undermines the stability and well-being of these households.

We ask for the support of our community, friends, and everyone who believes in justice and love. Help us advocate for lasting protection and fair treatment for my husband and others in similar situations. No family should have to live in constant fear of separation. Your voice can make a difference. Please support our efforts to ensure that families like ours remain safe, united, and free to contribute to the communities we love.
