For the last three years, I have been living through something I can only describe as crazy, frightening, and exhausting. I have spoken about parts of it before, then pulled back, then tried again, because that is what happens when your freedom feels controlled and your finances feel controlled and you are trying to survive while keeping your life together. I was already going through a divorce when I became vulnerable to something even worse. I trusted someone who presented himself as safe, relatable, and understanding, and instead I found myself dealing with intimidation, manipulation, and a level of control that I now believe put me and other women at risk.

What happened to me is not just about one relationship gone wrong. It is about how easy it is for financial abuse, coercive control, intimidation, and emotional abuse to hide in plain sight until the damage is already done. When someone is vulnerable, isolated, embarrassed, and trying to protect their work, their reputation, their home, or even their pet, that control gets even harder to name and harder to escape. Too many women are told to wait until the harm becomes undeniable, when the warning signs were there all along.

I am asking Illinois lawmakers to strengthen protections for survivors facing financial abuse and coercive control, and to make sure these patterns are taken seriously before they escalate further. Survivors need clear legal pathways to document intimidation, protect their money and property, and seek help without being dismissed because the abuse is not always visible. We should not have to prove the worst-case scenario before anyone listens.
