Protect Hurlstone Park and Sydney from Developer-Led Destruction

The issue

Petition from Hurlstone Park Association to Premier Minns’ State Government.

We the undersigned, are concerned over the lack of foresight of the Minns’ State Government’s proposed NSW Diverse and Well-Located Housing Reforms, and its impact on our suburbs. They are a “One Size Fits All” concept that does not meet the needs of our diverse suburbs.

We believe that there has not been sufficient consultation with Councils across Sydney’s numerous LGAs (there has been none to date with Canterbury-Bankstown) and none with the Community. Canterbury-Bankstown has already contributed much new housing with the Bankstown and Campsie Masterplans. Even if a suburb has not been targeted, they are still subject to these plans and therefore at risk. Canterbury-Bankstown will have a wall of high-rise along the rail line due to the distance between
stations. We also have numerous tiny shopping centres that could be impacted.

We ask that these plans be put on hold until there has been sufficient consultation with all the different suburbs that will be impacted at community meetings, and, to meet our Council Officers and Councillors. We also ask the State Government to look at other non-invasive ways to improve the problem of a shortage of housing, and rental affordability. We know there are many houses and apartments that are unoccupied in
our suburbs, often purchased as overseas investments. There are ways to increase density without destroying the liveability of our suburbs.
