Protect Honors and AP Math Classes at High School Level in the Corvallis School District

The Issue

I am a concerned student in the Corvallis School District, who believes in the importance of maintaining diversity in our educational system. Recently, there has been an alarming trend towards standardizing students under the guise of equity. This move threatens to eliminate honors and Advanced Placement (AP) math classes at the high school level. The removal of honors and advanced math k-7 creates a dangerous precedent for the future of honors and ap math in high school.

These advanced courses are crucial for students who wish to challenge themselves academically and prepare for rigorous college coursework. According to data from College Board, students who take AP classes perform better in college than those who don't (College Board Report). Removing these opportunities will not only limit our children's academic growth but also their future prospects.

Equity is indeed important; however, it should not be achieved by lowering standards or removing opportunities for those willing and capable of taking on more challenging coursework. Instead, we should strive for a system that provides support for all students while still allowing those with advanced abilities to thrive.

We must preserve honors and AP math classes as they play a significant role in fostering critical thinking skills among our youth. These are skills that have been shown to be essential not just in higher education but also in life beyond school (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics).

I urge you all - parents, educators, community members - let us stand together against this move towards standardization. Let us protect the right of every student to access education that matches their ability and ambition.

Please sign this petition if you believe we should safeguard honors and AP math classes at high school level.
