Protect historic Arthurtown from unchecked development
Protect historic Arthurtown from unchecked development
The Issue
This is personal to me because the house in the Arthurtown community was the only thing my grandmother owned in her life. She always said God gave her that home, and now a developer is coming in with aggressive tactics to condemn the homes in that community. Arthurtown and the neighboring Washington Park are majority African American communities, each with a rich history worth preserving.
Founded in 1871, Arthurtown is one of South Carolina's oldest independent African American neighborhoods. It stands as a testament to resilience and community pride for generations of families who have called it home. However, the relentless push for high-density student housing is threatening the very fabric of this historic area. This unchecked development risks economic and cultural erasure, and we cannot sit silently as our heritage is lost.
The Richland County Council and Richland County Planning Commission have the power to halt this detrimental wave of development. They can introduce reasonable zoning regulations that will allow for thoughtful, respectful urban growth without sacrificing our historic neighborhoods. We propose establishing protective zoning ordinances that limit high-density constructions, ensuring sustainable development that respects the cultural significance of Arthurtown and its residents.
The story of Arthurtown is a part of the broader tapestry of African American history in South Carolina. By preserving it, we honor the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us and pave the way for future generations to enjoy and learn from this richly diverse community.
Join us in urging the Richland County Council and Planning Commission to take immediate action to prevent further high-density developments in Arthurtown and protect what is an integral part of our shared cultural history. Sign the petition to show your support for preserving the legacy of this historic neighborhood.
