The Issue

In Hernando County, our cherished home, we have witnessed a rapid change in the landscape around us. Almost every day, it seems more trees are being cut down to make way for new developments. The tranquil and natural environment that many of us deeply love and cherish is quickly disappearing, replaced by sprawling developments and urbanization.

The rate of development in our county has been overwhelming. Yet, while trees fall and new buildings rise, we are facing a critical water shortage. Hernando County's water resources are under immense pressure. According to state water authorities, our aquifers are dwindling at an alarming rate, with consumption nearly double what is sustainable. Meanwhile, the population growth and increase in housing developments only escalate this demand, bring us closer to a crisis point.

Development is synonymous with progress, and progress is vital for economic growth. However, this progress should not come at the cost of our natural resources and environment. We need balanced and sustainable growth, where future developments are thoughtfully planned and coordinated with robust environmental safeguards.

We implore our local government to pause approvals for large developments until stronger environmental protection policies are implemented. Such policies could include reforestation commitments, integrated water management plans, and structured limitations on the speed and scale of developments.

Hernando County prides itself on its community values and its rich natural beauty. Let's ensure both can coexist for generations to come. By taking proactive measures, we can protect our trees and preserve our precious water resources, securing the health and sustainability of our county.

Please sign this petition to demand responsible development measures and to secure a sustainable future for Hernando's trees and water. Let's come together to safeguard our environment and community.
