Protect Healthcare Workers from Unsafe Conditions and Unfair Blame

The Issue

As a healthcare worker myself, I understand the challenges and pressures that come with our profession. Every day, nursing assistants, nurses, and other professionals strive to give the best possible care while coping with short staffing, heavy workloads, and physical and emotional exhaustion. It breaks my heart to see dedicated caregivers burning out or being blamed for outcomes that often stem from conditions beyond their control.

This issue is not just professional; it is personal. No one should face punishment or career loss for trying to provide care in unsafe or understaffed environments.

Recent events in Louisiana, involving a nursing assistant charged after a tragic patient accident, have brought national attention to the urgent need for reform. Whatever the individual circumstances, this tragedy highlights a larger truth: healthcare systems must do more to keep both patients and caregivers safe.

We call for:

Independent reviews of staffing levels and mechanical-lift safety procedures in long-term-care facilities.

Mandatory annual hands-on training for safe-patient-handling equipment.

Accountability for facilities, not scapegoating of individual workers, when systemic failures contribute to harm.

Stronger whistle-blower protections for healthcare staff who report unsafe conditions.

Hospitals and nursing homes must be places where professionals can work safely, not under constant pressure that risks their health and their patients’ well-being.

Let’s stand together to protect those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. By signing, you’re supporting fair treatment, safer workplaces, and a healthcare system that values its workers as much as its patients.
