The Issue

For countless grandparents, their grandchildren are the light of their lives. We look forward to the giggles, stories, and the unparalleled joy that only the little ones can bring. However, like many grandparents in Michigan, I am painfully restricted from seeing my grandchildren. Not only is this a personal heartache, but it also highlights a systemic issue that many grandparents in our community face.

Grandparents play an invaluable role in the lives of their families. Numerous studies, including one from the American Grandparents Association, have shown that a strong grandparent-grandchild connection positively impacts a child's emotional, social, and even cognitive development. Despite these undeniable benefits, Michigan's legal landscape currently does not provide adequate protection to grandparents who wish to maintain a relationship with their grandchildren, especially in situations where family dynamics have changed, such as divorce or estrangement.

In Michigan, grandparents' rights to visitation are limited. The current law only allows grandparents to seek visitation under certain conditions, such as when the parents are divorced, the child's parent is deceased, or other specific situations. This restrictiveness often leaves loving grandparents, like myself, without any legal recourse to foster a meaningful relationship with our grandchildren.

We propose a revision of Michigan's grandparent visitation laws to allow grandparents the opportunity to request visitation rights more flexibly. By adopting more inclusive legislation similar to that of states like Utah and Florida, where grandparents can petition for visitation rights on a broader range of familial circumstances, we can ensure that children's best interests are truly prioritized.

This petition calls for the Michigan Legislature to review and amend the current statutes governing grandparent visitation rights. By doing so, they will affirm the critical and nurturing role grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren, ensuring these bonds are preserved.

Join us in appealing to Michigan lawmakers to revise grandparent visitation laws. With your signature, you can help grandparents reclaim the joy of being an integral part of their grandchildren's lives. Sign the petition today to support family unity and the well-being of our children.
