FROM THE CONCERNED CITIZENS OF GOA
Dear Rahul Gandhi Ji,
At a time when Goa stands at an important political and social crossroads, we write to you with a sense of urgency, responsibility, and hope. This is not a letter driven by personal loyalties, internal rivalries, or the pursuit of positions. It is an appeal rooted in the aspirations of ordinary Goans who believe that political decisions must ultimately serve the larger interests of the people and strengthen democratic institutions.
We write to you at a critical moment for Goa and for the Congress Party in our state.
A decision has been taken that many citizens fear could undo years of patient organisational rebuilding, weaken the renewed confidence that people had begun to place in the Congress, and disrupt the momentum that was finally bringing supporters, volunteers, and ordinary Goans back into public life. The recent removal of Shri Amit Patkar as President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee has created deep concern across communities, not because of loyalty to one individual, but because of what many believe is at stake.
Today, thousands of concerned citizens across Goa young and old, professionals, farmers, fishermen, women, senior citizens, social workers, community leaders, Congress supporters, and ordinary Goans come together to appeal directly to you.
This letter is being written because many people fear that a hard-won revival of hope may be placed at risk just when it was beginning to bear results. It is about Goa, the future of the Congress Party in our state, and the trust that many citizens had started to restore in the party as a credible alternative capable of protecting Goa’s interests and aspirations.
For more than a decade, the Congress in Goa faced repeated setbacks. Defections, internal divisions, organisational challenges, and declining public confidence weakened the party and left many supporters disillusioned. Yet thousands remained committed to the belief that the Congress could rebuild and once again become a strong voice for Goa.
In recent years, that belief began to turn into hope. The party became more visible on the ground, grassroots structures were strengthened, public issues were raised consistently, and greater participation emerged from youth, women, and local communities. Citizens increasingly saw a Congress willing to engage with their concerns and stand beside them.
For many Goans, Shri Amit Patkar became closely associated with this revival. Over the last four years, he worked to rebuild the organisation, travelled extensively across the state, strengthened local networks, encouraged wider participation, and helped restore confidence among supporters and ordinary citizens alike. Whether the issues involved farmers, fishermen, unemployment, rising prices, environmental concerns, land rights, or the protection of Goa’s identity and heritage, people saw a leader who was accessible, visible, and actively engaged.
The Congress’s renewed momentum was the result of collective effort and years of hard work by countless individuals. However, many citizens believe that Amit Patkar played a central role in that rebuilding process and became a symbol of the party’s resurgence in Goa.
Rahul Ji,
Every political organisation faces moments when continuity matters as much as change. Positions can be filled, but certain leaders become closely linked to the confidence, momentum, and direction of an organisation.
The recent decision to remove Amit Patkar as President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee has therefore generated concern and uncertainty among many citizens, supporters, and well-wishers of the Congress in Goa.
This concern is not personal or factional. It stems from a genuine fear that the momentum built over recent years may be disrupted just as Congress was regaining public confidence and strengthening its position as a credible alternative in the state.
Many citizens who had become disengaged from politics began participating again because they believed positive change was possible. Young people reconnected with the democratic process, and former supporters who had lost faith in the Congress started believing that the party could once again represent their aspirations.
Today, they are asking a simple question:
Why interrupt a rebuilding process that was beginning to restore confidence and momentum ?
Throughout your political journey, you have spoken about empowering grassroots voices, rewarding commitment, and strengthening leaders who work among the people. Many in Goa believed that the recent progress of the Congress reflected those values.
The concern being expressed today is therefore about more than a leadership change. It is about whether years of organisational rebuilding, public engagement, and hard-earned trust are being adequately recognised and protected. It is also about the message sent to those who invested their faith in the revival of the Congress in Goa.
At a time when Goa faces significant challenges, including pressures on its identity and culture, environmental concerns, rising living costs, unemployment, and uncertainty about the future, the state needs a Congress Party that is united, credible, and deeply connected to the people.
Many citizens believe that continuity in leadership is important when it is producing results, strengthening the organisation, and building public confidence. They believe leaders who have demonstrated the ability to unite people, inspire trust, and expand the party’s reach should be supported in completing the work they have begun.
We therefore humbly urge you to listen to the voices emerging from across Goa: the youth who are engaging once again, the women and senior citizens who have renewed their participation, the farmers, fishermen, professionals, entrepreneurs, social workers, community leaders, and ordinary citizens who want to see a strong Congress in the state.
We respectfully request that you reconsider this decision in the larger interest of both the Congress Party and the people of Goa.
Because this moment is about more than any individual. It is about preserving the faith of those who believed in the party’s revival, protecting the hope that has begun to return among ordinary citizens, and ensuring that Goa has a strong and effective opposition capable of defending its people, identity, and future.
History often remembers not only the decisions leaders make, but also their willingness to listen to the voices of the people. We trust that the sentiments being expressed across Goa will receive your thoughtful consideration.
Goa does not seek special treatment.
Goa seeks to be heard, respected, and protected.
Respectfully,
The Concerned Citizens of Goa
