A San Diego family says their 15-year-old’s gender-affirming care was canceled just weeks before surgery. The care had been planned for months, with support from doctors and therapists at Rady Children’s Hospital.

Now, the family believes the hospital canceled the surgery because of pressure from the Trump administration — which has proposed cutting federal funding to hospitals that provide gender-affirming care to minors.

This is happening in California, where that care is still legal and protected under state law.

No family should be left scrambling to find essential medical care because of politics. No young person should have to question whether their identity puts their health care at risk.

We call on:

• California state leaders to affirm that gender-affirming care for minors remains protected
• California hospitals, including Rady Children’s, to stand by their patients and medical ethics
• Health systems to clearly explain how they will continue to offer care without interruption

Families should not be left in limbo. Young people deserve to feel safe and supported when seeking care that is backed by major medical organizations and protected by California law.
