The Issue

For generations, my family and I have called Florida our home. As multi-generational Floridians, we have witnessed firsthand the beauty and unique ecosystem that our state offers. However, it deeply saddens and concerns us to see Florida potentially put at risk by massive developments that cater to big money interests rather than the preservation of our treasured environment. One such development is the proposed cruise port south of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge—a project that promises economic gains but threatens irreversible damage to Florida's precious waters.

The construction and operation of a cruise port in this location will not only disrupt the delicate balance of our marine and coastal ecosystems but could lead to severe environmental consequences. The increase in maritime traffic is likely to result in water pollution from fuel spills and waste discharge. Noise pollution from larger vessels can disturb marine life, especially in sensitive habitats. Such changes can degrade the quality of the water, affecting both marine biodiversity and the health of our coastline.

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, past instances of port development have led to a decline in seagrass beds and coral reefs, both vital for the health of our marine environment. With estimates showing that stakes are even higher for this proposed project, the potential for harm is significant. In stark contrast to the economic promises, the true cost of such development could ultimately be the nourishment and protection of our environment—a price too high for any economic gain.

Floridians and lovers of this state need to take action to preserve what makes Florida truly unique. We call on local authorities, environmental agencies, and concerned citizens to reevaluate this proposed project and consider sustainable alternatives that do not compromise our natural resources and well-being. Protecting Florida's water is a responsibility shared by all, and it is essential for ensuring a future where both the environment and economy can thrive without one being sacrificed for the other.

We ask you to join us in the fight to safeguard Florida’s water and ecosystem. In signing this petition, you stand with us for a sustainable Florida, for our heritage, and for future generations who deserve to enjoy Florida's pristine waters and natural beauty. Please sign this petition to stop the cruise port project south of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and help preserve our beloved state.
