Protect Florida Cities’ Right to Programs and Events for All Communities

Protect Florida Cities’ Right to Programs and Events for All Communities
The Issue
Florida’s cities and counties exist to serve the people who live there — all of them.
Right now, state lawmakers are advancing legislation that would prohibit local governments from supporting so-called “diversity, equity, and inclusion” activities. While supporters say the bill is about preventing misuse of taxpayer dollars, local leaders across Florida warn that its sweeping language could have broad consequences: putting beloved cultural festivals, mentorship programs, translation services, and community advisory boards at risk.
From Jewish film festivals in Miami Beach to Pride celebrations in St. Petersburg, from Hispanic business chambers to Black Affairs Advisory Boards, these programs are not political buzzwords. They are community-building efforts that bring neighbors together, strengthen small businesses, and help residents participate fully in civic life.
This bill could expose local governments to lawsuits and even threaten the removal of elected officials for supporting programs that reflect the unique character and needs of their communities. Faced with that risk, many cities and counties may simply stop hosting or supporting cultural and educational events altogether. That would mean fewer opportunities for tourism, fewer economic benefits for local businesses, and fewer spaces where Floridians can come together across differences and be supported.
Florida is strongest when local communities have the freedom to make decisions that reflect their residents’ values. Conservatives and liberals alike believe in limited government, fiscal responsibility, and protecting local control. This legislation undermines those principles by imposing a one-size-fits-all mandate from Tallahassee.
We urge Governor DeSantis and members of the Florida Legislature to reject or significantly amend this bill to ensure that cities and counties can continue supporting lawful cultural events, mentorship programs, translation services, and advisory boards that serve their communities.
Florida should lead by empowering its communities — not silencing them. Protect local control. Protect community traditions. Protect the freedom of every Floridian to participate fully in civic life.
