Protect Florida Children: Ask Lawmakers to Review Kratom and Kratom-Derived Products
The Issue
Our daughter Edie is 2 years old.
On September 23, 2026, our family experienced every parent’s worst nightmare when Edie was accidentally exposed to a kratom product.
Within a very short period of time, she stopped breathing and lost her pulse. A police officer began CPR, EMS continued resuscitation and administered naloxone, and Edie was transported to the hospital. She required emergency resuscitation, intubation, and treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit.
She survived.
We are incredibly grateful that our daughter is home today. But what happened to her changed our family forever.
We are creating this petition to ask Florida lawmakers and public-health officials to examine whether the state’s current protections surrounding kratom and kratom-derived products are sufficient to protect children from accidental exposure.
Florida currently regulates kratom products and prohibits their sale to anyone under 21. Florida law also addresses kratom leaf, extracts, synthetic alkaloids, and synthetically derived compounds.
But products can take many forms, and young children can gain access to things in seconds.
We are asking Florida officials to carefully examine:
• The potential risks of accidental pediatric exposure.
• Whether current age restrictions adequately address accidental exposure by children.
• The risks associated with concentrated extracts and kratom-derived compounds.
• Whether current definitions adequately address newly modified or concentrated compounds.
• Whether additional measures such as child-resistant packaging, labeling, storage requirements, restrictions, or other protections should be considered.
Florida lawmakers considered kratom legislation in 2026, but those bills did not become law.
We believe the conversation deserves continued attention and evidence-based consideration.
Our daughter survived.
Her name is Edie.
And she is here today.
We are sharing her story so that families, health professionals, and policymakers can have a broader conversation about accidental pediatric exposure and how children can be protected.
