The Issue

As a concerned member of our North Somerset community, I am deeply troubled by Bristol Airport's recent proposal to install runway approach lights on Felton Common. This cherished space, valuable not just for its recreational opportunities but also for its rich historical and ecological significance, is under threat.

Felton Common is a local treasure, cherished by many in our community as a place of natural beauty and a haven for wildlife. Among its inhabitants are rare species that depend on its unique ecosystem to thrive. Moreover, the Common is home to Neolithic barrows, lending it substantial archaeological importance. Allowing the airport to de-classify this land and erase commoner grazing rights could have dire, irreversible repercussions for both the environment and our heritage.

Bristol Airport's expansion plans do not only threaten Felton Common’s ecological and historical value but also disregard the needs and rights of the local community. The Common serves as an essential green space for exercise, relaxation, and community gatherings, enriching the daily lives of those who call North Somerset home. Transforming it into an extension of airport infrastructure would strip away these benefits and disturb the balance that has preserved its unique character for generations.

We must stand together to protect Felton Common. I urge decision-makers to consider alternative solutions that do not destroy our environment and history. By investing in technology that minimizes environmental footprints or redesigning flight paths, Bristol Airport can expand responsibly without the need to encroach on our precious common land.

Please sign this petition to stop the de-classification and degradation of Felton Common, preserving its vital role in our community and safeguarding its future for generations to come. Your support can make a difference in keeping our community's peace and history intact.
