I’m Jesseka White, a resident of Kimber Green Apartments in Evansville, Indiana, and I refuse to allow a multi-state corporate landlord to silence us.
From June 25 to July 10, Cornerstone Residential, the property management firm responsible for our complex, manually cut off all electrical utility infrastructure to our occupied home. This action wasn't just inconvenient; it was life-threatening. With temperatures soaring, we were trapped in our apartment, unable to use fans or air conditioning. We endured sweltering nights, worried for our children's safety and well-being.
The situation was dire. Evansville recorded multiple days with temperatures exceeding 95°F during this period. The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory, warning residents of the risks of heat-related illnesses. Yet, Cornerstone Residential ignored these warnings and continued with their illegal utility lockout.
What Cornerstone Residential did isn't just morally wrong; it's also a potential violation of tenant rights and consumer protection laws. Holding a corporate landlord accountable for such actions is crucial not only for my family but for all tenants who might face similar issues in the future.
We demand that Cornerstone Residential be investigated by the relevant authorities for their actions during the heatwave. They should face penalties for their negligence and be compelled to take steps to ensure this never happens again.
