The Issue

Every day, I witness the distressing reality faced by too many elderly individuals who fall victim to financial manipulation. Working with Age UK, I have seen the heartbreaking consequences of elders being preyed upon, often by those they trust most. These vulnerable members of our community are often manipulated into handing over control of their finances, leaving them not only financially depleted but emotionally devastated.

Financial abuse of the elderly is a silent epidemic, often hidden behind closed doors. According to Action on Elder Abuse, up to 500,000 older people in the UK are believed to experience financial abuse every year. This is unacceptable. We need immediate legal reforms to protect our senior citizens from exploitation. One of the critical steps towards this protection is the introduction of stricter regulations regarding Power of Attorney (PoA).

Power of Attorney is designed to help older people by allowing trusted individuals to manage their affairs. However, when not monitored properly, it can be misused as a tool for exploitation. We need legislation that ensures greater oversight and accountability. Implementing regular mandatory audits of PoA arrangements and establishing a robust network of support and education for those holding the responsibility can dramatically reduce cases of financial abuse.

Imagine your grandparents, parents, or elderly friends. We owe them the protection and dignity they deserve in their later years. By coming together, we can shine a light on this pressing issue and push for a change that will safeguard our elderly. Stronger laws and vigilant enforcement can create a safer environment for them.

Your signature on this petition is a step towards justice and security for the elderly. Join me in urging lawmakers to pass comprehensive legislation that both prevents and punishes financial abuse of the elderly.
