The Issue

Growing up in El Paso, I have witnessed firsthand the unique character and charm that our neighborhoods possess. It is why I chose to settle down here, to raise my family amidst the friendly faces and familiar streets of our city. However, recent proposals to alter Title 20 of the Zoning Code threaten to disrupt the harmony and character of our neighborhoods.

On Tuesday, August 19th, at 10:00 AM, our City Council is set to vote on agenda items 48, 49 and 50 as presented on July 22nd. These changes include removing street parking requirements and allowing multi-unit rentals in single-family zones without sufficient regulation. Such changes, if implemented, could significantly alter the landscape of El Paso, potentially overcrowding neighborhoods and straining local infrastructure.

It’s crucial to understand that our current zoning laws already offer room for flexibility through Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and parking variances after appropriate review. These provisions ensure that growth is managed and in harmony with our community's needs and aspirations.

By removing these vital reviews and allowing unchecked developments, we risk losing the distinctive character of El Paso's neighborhoods. The proposed changes could lead to congestion, lack of parking spaces, increased traffic, and potential deterioration in the quality of life for residents who value the quiet and community-focused nature of their homes.

El Paso is a city that thrives on its cultural richness and community spirit. To preserve the very essence that makes our neighborhoods special, I urge you to join me in asking our City Representatives and the Mayor to vote NO on these agenda items.

Stand with me and protect the neighborhoods that make El Paso an incredible place to live. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard in the chambers of City Hall. Our future and the identity of our communities are at stake. Let’s safeguard them, together.
