Protect Educational Freedom

The Issue

From the undersigned citizens of Mont Vernon, New Hampshire:

At our March 12, 2025 town meeting, a warrant article (Article 4) was voted on that sent a letter to your offices regarding Educational Freedom Accounts. We believe that this unprecedented act was unnecessary and unjustified.

  1. We recognize that the state has appropriate oversight of these accounts, and that educational freedom should remain as an integral and essential part of the education of New Hampshire’s students. New Hampshire Title 15, Chapter 194-F, has clear guidelines for the EFA program. We accept the guidelines as written, and support the expansion of the EFA program as a means for adequate education grants to reach all school-aged children of New Hampshire.
  2. Families in New Hampshire have the right to choose an alternative education path that best fits the needs of their families. When the local public school is not desirable, equipped, or suitable for their needs, that alternative path should be financially feasible for everyone who chooses something besides their local public school.
  3. Our right to educate our children in the way that we believe is best for them should remain uncontested and unthreatened by any state oversight. And since only 7% (approximately 200 out of a population of approximately 2600 people) of our town’s population voted for this article, it’s possible (and likely in our observation) that the language of this warrant article does not reflect our community at large. This warrant article specifically calls out EFA families and asks for “clear, verifiable evidence that [EFA money] is being spent wisely and delivering results.” Our public schools are funded without contingency and not for their results. In fact, districts that are not performing well are often met with increased state and federal funding.

We appreciate your consideration of this petition, and anticipate your full and continued support of educational freedom in New Hampshire.
