Protect Donkeys in Turks and Caicos — Stop Neglect and Cruelty Now

Protect Donkeys in Turks and Caicos — Stop Neglect and Cruelty Now
The Issue
•Who is affected•
The donkeys of Grand Turk, once central to island life and survival, remain a vital part of our cultural heritage and identity. For generations, they carried loads, supported families, and became living symbols of resilience. Today, they continue to define the island’s character and are a cherished sight for both locals and visitors. Yet they suffer from neglect, untreated injuries, road accidents, lack of veterinary care, and weak legal protections. When the donkeys suffer, it impacts both the animals and the well-being of the community that cares for them.
•What is at stake•
If we continue without decisive action, Grand Turk risks losing more than just donkeys. We risk losing a cornerstone of our culture, our heritage, and part of the island experience that visitors take home with them. Suffering animals diminish our image as a tourism destination, and the unmanaged donkey population creates safety hazards for residents and guests. International reputation, public health, and even tourism revenue are at stake if urgent measures are not taken.
•Why now is the time to act•
Now is the time to act because the situation has reached a breaking point. Despite years of emails, articles, and meetings with overseas organizations, little has changed. The donkey population is rising, and daily incidents involving their welfare are being reported. Delay will only worsen the problem and make solutions more costly. Acting now will show leadership, safeguard our heritage, and prevent further harm to animals, residents, and the tourism industry that sustains our economy.
•Our Request•
We respectfully petition the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands to:
Strengthen and enforce laws specifically protecting donkeys from cruelty, neglect, and road dangers.
Allocate sustainable funding for a full-time veterinarian based in Grand Turk, an emergency care facility, transport vehicle, clean wells for drinking water, and road signage to protect donkeys.
Support humane management of donkey populations through spay/neuter and vaccination programs.
Create or empower an Animal Welfare Unit with clear authority to enforce laws, manage care, and educate the public.
Incorporate donkey education programs into schools, teaching children respect and care for these animals as part of our heritage.
Require government response to this petition within 60 days of its submission, ensuring accountability and timely action.
•Why This Matters•
• Protecting donkeys preserves an important part of Grand Turk’s identity, history, and culture.
• Humane care and visible management of donkeys will enhance the tourism experience and improve the island’s reputation internationally.
• Donkey welfare is tied to public safety, reducing risks of road accidents and aggressive stray populations.
• A strong framework for donkey protection aligns with international standards and strengthens national pride in humane governance.
We, the undersigned citizens, residents, and visitors of Grand Turk, call upon the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands to act with urgency. Donkeys are not just animals; they are living symbols of our resilience, culture, and community. By safeguarding their welfare, we safeguard our heritage, our safety, and our future.
