Protect Domville State Forest from Quarry Before It Is Too Late
Why this petition matters

Meel merran means "eye, look out" and the signalling hill in Domville State Forest, West Ridge is the area that the local indigenous Kambuwal people used. It can easily be seen from the Gore Hwy, less than a km away opposite the Captains Mountain Roadhouse on the South side of the highway. Our town, Millmerran is named after it. It is steep and rugged. That's why not many people have dared to climb it. Fortunately, West Ridge has guarded its secrets well: Grasstrees thought to be thousands of years old, koalas, a butterfly Acrodipsas violaceae found nowhere else in the world, indigenous sacred sites all are to be found here. BUT IT IS ALL NOW THREATENED.
The Dept Forestry, Agriculture and Fisheries from Gympie have given the go-ahead for a major portion of this area to be quarried by a company from Brisbane and Maryborough, and a large area of rock ballast from this unique place is earmarked for extraction. The company has in fact been given permission to bulldoze a road into it and start test drilling whenever they want to. The photos above show precisely what is at risk of being destroyed as these images come from the mapped area of the proposed quarry. There have been NO SURVEYS BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLE, ARCHAEOLOGISTS OR WILDLIFE EXPERTS!! THE TERMS OF THE PROPOSED QUARRY HAVE NOT EVEN GONE THROUGH. There is no benefit to Millmerran and there is a major risk of destruction to the koalas, butterflies, ancient trees, and indigenous sacred sites. The area has been officially designated and mapped by the Australian Koala Foundation as prime habitat. Preliminary surveys by scientists and archaeologists MUST be done. Please sign so that our voices can be heard and our demands for a halt to road building and drilling are met so that proper surveys can be conducted. MILLMERRIANS PLEASE HELP STOP THIS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!
