Growing up in Florida, I have witnessed firsthand the transformation of our beloved state. From its pristine beaches, orange groves, farm land and  sportsmans areas to its historic sites, Florida is a tapestry woven with remarkable stories of the past. Yet, in recent years, many of these narratives are being erased by the rapid pace of development. One significant part of this history is the Dixie Highway/Brick Road through Flagler County.  This 9 mile iconic road is more than just a path; it's a testament to the ingenuity and determination of early 20th-century Americans. The Brick Road,  olaced on the National Register of Historic Places in 2025,has stood for decades, a witness to countless journeys and stories shared along its route. Its destruction would mean losing a piece of our shared legacy. Florida's history is rich, and the Dixie Highway is a vital thread within that tapestry.  Development is essential, but it should never come at the cost of erasing our past. Preservation and progress can, and should, coexist. There are alternatives to destruction, such as restoration and incorporation of these historic sites within new developments. These pieces of our past can serve as cultural reminders and can be great amenities that attract tourists and connect them with the deep history of Florida. Statistics from the National Trust for Historic Preservation indicate that heritage tourism can significantly boost local economies. By saving the Dixie Highway and Brick Road, not only do we preserve history, but we also potentially enhance the cultural wealth of our communities. Let us come together to urge local policymakers and developers to reconsider their plans for the Dixie Highway. We call for an immediate halt to any demolition/ planning efforts and propose a collaborative approach to development that honors our past while building our future.
