The Issue

What's Happening--again!

The State of California 22nd DAA, Fairgrounds Board of Directors, has directed a developers' lobbying firm, Southwest Strategies, to assist in creating a master plan for all Fairgrounds properties, including Horsepark, for possible changed use. Horsepark is at serious risk of being targeted for housing.

This Southwest Strategies "master planning process" doesn't even mention our beloved 65-acre horse and dog show property at presentations to the public, except on a map. They say that they want public input, so give them input. SIGN THIS PETITION.

Why This Matters--SEE RECENT NEWS FROM NOV 18 Fairgrounds' sponsored meeting at the SOUND!

Horsepark is an iconic park beloved by thousands of horse and dog show competitors and their fans. Beautifully remodeled by a premier horse event operator, HITS LLC, Horsepark is the last fully developed horse show event venue in San Diego County.

Yet the "master plan" could include building multi-unit apartments on Horsepark, even though the County of San Diego denied housing permits in the 1970's due to the floodplain location. Today is no different--still unsuited for development due to

  • Floodplain Danger: Horsepark sits in a 50-year floodplain -- unsafe and unsuitable for any housing.
  • No Transit Access: Located 1.5 miles from shopping and services, people must have cars as there are no transit stops at Horsepark.
  • Environmental & Community Value: Our park borders a vital, sensitive environmental restoration zone, protects our dark skies, and serves as a priceless public space for equestrians, families, dog sports enthusiasts, and wildlife alike.
