Decatur is growing — but our infrastructure has not kept pace with the needs of our residents.

Beltline Road and Highway 31 are two of the busiest corridors in our city. Yet in many areas, there are no continuous sidewalks and no clearly marked crosswalks. Residents are forced to walk along road shoulders or cross multiple lanes of traffic without protected crossing points.

This is a preventable safety risk.

We are calling on the Decatur City Council to:

Install continuous sidewalks along Beltline Road and Highway 31 within city limits
Add clearly marked, visible crosswalks at key intersections and high-traffic areas
Conduct a pedestrian safety assessment of these corridors
Develop a phased improvement plan with dedicated funding
Sidewalks and crosswalks are not luxuries — they are essential infrastructure.

Safer pedestrian access will:

Protect children and families
Improve accessibility for seniors and individuals with disabilities
Encourage walking and healthier lifestyles
Strengthen local businesses
Increase property values
Improve overall quality of life in Decatur
