The Issue
We are so lucky to live in an area where we can see wildlife right outside our kitchen window. Of late, we have seen more frequently terribly infected coyotes with mange. It's horrendous, and it breaks our hearts to witness these beautiful creatures suffering so unnecessarily. Mange, a contagious skin disease caused by mites, leads to severe itching, hair loss, and can even be fatal if left untreated. This is a plight we cannot ignore.
Coyotes play a crucial role in our ecosystem, and their distress not only impacts their population but also the balance of wildlife in our community. Mange is rampant, and affected coyotes can suffer greatly before succumbing to the infection. Yet, there is hope and a path to help them.
We can all be part of the solution by advocating for local wildlife authorities to initiate a mange treatment program. Such a program would involve monitoring coyote populations, capturing those in distress, and treating them with effective antiparasitic medications before releasing them back into the wild.
Proven success stories from various regions have shown that these programs can significantly reduce mange spread and help wildlife populations recover.
We urge local wildlife authorities to prioritize the development and implementation of a humane mange management plan. This plan should be integrated into existing wildlife management strategies and funded appropriately to ensure sustainability and effectiveness.
