The Issue
South Los Angeles holds deep personal significance to me and so many others who call it home. Today, our vibrant community is grappling with a daunting housing crisis. Rapid gentrification coupled with soaring rents is forcing long-established Black and Latino families out of their neighborhoods—places where their roots are deeply embedded. As these families are pushed out, we're not just losing homes, but the very cultural soul that has defined this part of Los Angeles for decades.
This isn't just a looming threat—it's an ongoing struggle that affects the daily lives of thousands. According to the Los Angeles Times, rental prices in South LA have increased by over 32% in the past five years alone, a rate far outpacing local income growth. Simultaneously, a UCLA study noted that Black and Latino communities are being displaced at disproportionately higher rates than others.
The city of Los Angeles has a moral obligation to protect these communities and preserve our rich cultural heritage. We are calling on city officials to take immediate and concrete action by implementing stricter rent control measures, especially in areas hardest hit by gentrification. Such measures will help stabilize housing prices and give working-class families a fighting chance to remain in their homes.
Moreover, it's crucial to increase funding for affordable housing projects that specifically target historically marginalized communities. Allocating resources to build and maintain affordable housing can provide long-term solutions to prevent further displacement.
Our communities are at risk, and without decisive action, the unique and diverse identity of South Los Angeles is in danger of being erased. By increasing protections and providing affordable housing, we can ensure that future generations can grow up with the same sense of belonging and pride that past generations enjoyed.
