Protect Colorado’s Biodiversity: Recognize Fungi in State Conservation Laws!

The Issue

For too long, fungi have been the unsung heroes of our ecosystems—working behind the scenes to nourish our forests, clean our soils, and sustain plant and animal life. Yet, Colorado’s conservation laws still do not recognize fungi alongside flora (plants) and fauna (animals).

We have the chance to change that. The Flora, Fauna, and Funga Conservation Act of 2024 would amend state statutes to include fungi in biodiversity protections—ensuring these vital organisms are safeguarded just like plants and animals.

🛑 The Problem:

Current environmental laws ignore fungi, even though they are essential for soil health, carbon sequestration, and climate resilience.

Fungi face threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change, yet they receive zero legal protection in Colorado.

Without policy recognition, conservation funding and research leave fungi out, weakening our state’s ability to protect entire ecosystems.

🌱 The Solution:

This bill adds fungi (funga) to state conservation laws, ensuring equal protection with plants and animals.

It amends existing laws, such as the Colorado Endangered Species Act and Natural Areas Act, to include fungi.

It aligns Colorado with global biodiversity standards—following in the footsteps of countries like New Zealand, Chile, and Brazil, which already protect fungi.

🌎 Why This Matters:

Fungi are climate warriors. Mycorrhizal fungi store up to 70% of carbon in forest soils, helping fight climate change.

They protect our water and soil. Fungi like Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushrooms) break down pollutants and restore damaged lands.

They sustain life. Over 90% of plants rely on fungi to survive. Without them, our forests, grasslands, and agriculture would suffer.

📢 Take Action!

We need YOUR help to show lawmakers that Colorado supports fungi conservation! Sign this petition to urge the Colorado General Assembly to pass the Flora, Fauna, and Funga Conservation Act of 2024 and make Colorado a leader in modern biodiversity protection.
