Protect Cobourg: Stop the Massive 310 Division Shelter

Protect Cobourg: Stop the Massive 310 Division Shelter
The Issue
Join us in safeguarding Cobourg's charm and security. The Northumberland County Council & the Transition House's proposal to repurpose 310 Division St. into a massive 12,000 sq ft. Shelter, drop-in center, and warming room sparks concerns. The escalating issues of violence, increased crime rates, public drug use, and the deteriorating cleanliness in the downtown area are taking a toll on our community. Business owners, homeowners, and residents feel the impact and our community is more divided than ever.
Transitioning from a 22-bed facility (4 beds per room) to a massive structure with 35 ROOMS raises critical questions. Is this space designed to accommodate 70, 105, or even 140 individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues? Is expansion warranted with consistent vacancy rates at the current shelter? Will it worsen existing problems and attract those unwilling to adhere to shelter rules? What is the additional budget source for supporting our first responders with extra police, paramedics, and firefighters? What mental health resources is the County ready to invest in to support this facility? Transition House is only responsible for shelter, addressing mental health and addiction requires more comprehensive solutions and it's out of their purview.
Let's unite to safeguard our town; it's time for residents to have a voice.
While we empathize with the plight of the unhoused who seek shelter, treatment and support, it's crucial to consider alternative uses for this premium space. Rather than converting it into a shelter, the location could be utilized for income-based rentals, dedicated units for downtrodden seniors, or much-needed affordable housing. These options would contribute to addressing the broader housing challenges in Northumberland County, ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable community.
