Protect Clemson Students From Coercive Hazing Practices

Protect Clemson Students From Coercive Hazing Practices
The Issue
College should be a place of growth, friendship, and leadership, not coercion, humiliation, or fear.
Clemson University has now placed four fraternities on probation for hazing violations over the past two academic years. Most recently, Delta Chi was found responsible for incorporating hazing practices into its new member process, including personal servitude, mandatory designated driving, line-ups involving calisthenics, and conduct that could interfere with an investigation.
Even when described as mild, hazing creates an environment of pressure and imbalance of power. New members are placed in situations where they may feel they cannot say no. Personal servitude and forced participation are not harmless traditions. They are coercive practices that undermine student dignity and safety.
The fact that multiple fraternities have faced hazing violations signals a broader cultural issue that requires meaningful reform.
This petition calls on Clemson University, the Office of Community and Ethical Standards, and Greek Life leadership to implement stronger protections for students during new member processes. These protections should include:
- Clear, public guidelines prohibiting servitude-style and coercive activities
- Mandatory annual anti-hazing education that includes real-world examples and reporting protections
- Independent monitoring of high-risk periods during recruitment and initiation
- Stronger consequences for organizations that attempt to interfere with investigations
Students should never have to endure degrading or intimidating treatment to belong. Greek life can and should exist without hazing.
Protecting students does not mean dismantling fraternity culture. It means reforming it so that leadership, brotherhood, and community are built on respect rather than pressure.
Clemson has taken steps by placing organizations on probation. Now it must go further to prevent these situations from repeating.
Sign this petition to demand stronger safeguards, clear accountability, and a campus culture that protects every Clemson student from coercive hazing practices.
