Protect Citizens from Deepfake Scams: Support AI Transparency Laws
The Issue
PROTECT AMERICANS FROM AI FRAUD: DEMAND AI CONTENT LABELING AND TELECOM REGULATION
The Problem: AI Fraud is Already Happening
Imagine receiving a call from your grandson, who sounds distressed, telling you he’s in trouble and needs money immediately. His voice is exactly as you remember it—there’s no reason to doubt him. But there’s a problem: he never actually called you.
Criminals are now using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to clone voices, tricking people into believing they are speaking with their loved ones. With just a few seconds of a recorded voice from social media or a past call, scammers can recreate a person’s voice with shocking accuracy and manipulate victims into sending money or revealing personal information.
This is not science fiction—it’s happening right now. AI-generated fraud is on the rise, and thousands of Americans, especially senior citizens, have already lost their savings to AI voice scams.
At the same time, deepfake videos and AI-generated content are spreading misinformation on social media, making it harder than ever to distinguish truth from deception. Yet, there are no laws requiring companies to label AI-generated content or prevent AI phone scams.
This is why we need immediate action from Congress and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The Solution: AI Content Labeling and Telecom Fraud Prevention
We are calling for a new law that will require social media platforms and telecommunications companies to take responsibility for AI-generated fraud and deception. This legislation would:
✅ Require social media platforms (Meta, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter/X) to label all AI-generated content clearly, so users know when they are interacting with AI-created videos, images, or voices.
✅ Mandate telecommunications companies (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) to detect and warn users about AI-cloned voice fraud, preventing criminals from using AI to impersonate loved ones.
✅ Enforce penalties on companies that fail to comply, ensuring real consequences for neglecting public safety.
Without these measures, AI fraud will only get worse. We must act now before deepfake scams and AI phone fraud become a widespread crisis.
Why This Matters: Real People Are Already Victims
📍 A grandmother in Arizona lost $15,000 to a scammer using AI to impersonate her grandson. She was convinced he had been arrested and needed immediate bail money. She only realized the deception after it was too late.
📍 A businessman in New York was tricked into sending sensitive company information when he believed he was on a call with his CEO. The voice was AI-generated, leading to a security breach.
📍 A couple in California was scammed into transferring money for a fake emergency when they received a phone call that sounded exactly like their daughter crying for help.
These stories are not isolated incidents—they are a growing reality that could happen to anyone.
