Protect Chorlton precinct shops- Quality Save to close. City planners are letting us down
Protect Chorlton precinct shops- Quality Save to close. City planners are letting us down
The Issue
Doing nothing means we will end up with nothing!
Quality Save in Chorlton and is due to close in Christmas Eve 2023 and Frosts the butchers in January 2024 because GMPF are demolishing the precinct and are not offering alternative premises. This is a big change from original plans that showed places for additional stores not less.
This petition is to raise awareness about what is happening and gather support to lobby the Council to stop redevelopment of the area until we are assured plans include maintaining, at the very least, our current facilities and include relocation of Quality Save and other shops before demolition begins. Quality Save reps have said they do not want to close but have no choice because of the 'redevelopment' of the precinct.
Most people in Chorlton will be effected whether or not we use the precinct because there will be knock on effect. The sense of community will be lost because we won't have a centre. People will no longer have the choice to do the majority of their shopoing locally or 'little and often' which the precinct shops allowed. This will dispropotionatly effect older people and people who do not own a car. Small independent shops and bars will no longer benefit from passing trade. There will be reduced spending in the local economy as people go to Sale, Stretford or Altrincham (Trafford) instead of Chorlton (Manchester).
Young people with families will begin to choose Sale or Urmston because these places are building on current facilities as Chorlton becomes more rundown and depleted of useful shops. The Councils treatment of Chorlton needs to be challenged.
This petition is also to encourage peoples involvement in Chorlton Voices (AkA Chorlton Civic). I'm not a member this organisation could lobby and are desperate to take action to prevent the continued downgrading of our wonderfully eclectic and diverse (in every way) community. But attendance is too small for the Councillors to accept that they are representative of the community as a whole. Please look on line for details and attend the next meeting. We need to act now its scary how quickly the bulldozers can be organised when the council feels challenged!
Please sign the petition if you agree that redevelopment should be delayed until we have clarity about how shops and services we currently enjoy will be supported to remain.
Also, whether you sign this or not, please find out about and attend the next Chorlton Voice AKA Chorlton Civic meeting so you can see and hear for yourself what is happening.
The Council say they want to regenerate town centres- they should put in brackets 'except Chorlton'.
The councils actions could literally be the final stab to drain of the life blood out of our already ailing centre.
This might seem trivial in the scheme of national and global concerns but its having the little things in place that supports us to deal with the large.
