Protect Children Online: Stop Exploitation and Ensure Accountability on Social Media
Protect Children Online: Stop Exploitation and Ensure Accountability on Social Media
The Issue
In recent years, social media platforms—especially Instagram—have seen a rapid rise in content involving minors. While digital platforms can be a space for creativity and expression, there is a growing concern about the exposure, misuse, and potential exploitation of children online.
Many children under the age of 15 are being featured in public videos without sufficient safeguards. This raises serious questions about:
- Consent and privacy
- Online safety and long-term digital impact
- Potential misuse of children for influence, engagement, or external agendas
At the same time, the spread of misinformation and unverified claims by influencers is becoming increasingly concerning. Without proper regulation and accountability, social media risks becoming a space where misleading narratives can influence public opinion—often amplified using emotionally sensitive content involving children.
We call for the following actions:
Stronger Regulations for Child Content
Enforce age verification and consent frameworks for children under 15
Restrict monetization of content involving minors without safeguards
Platform Accountability (Instagram & Others)
Clear guidelines on featuring minors in public content
Faster reporting and removal mechanisms for harmful or exploitative content
Independent & Transparent Investigations
Request regulatory authorities to examine misinformation networks and funding transparency across digital platforms
Ensure that any political or commercial use of social media follows ethical and legal standards
Digital Literacy & Awareness
Promote awareness among parents and guardians about risks of overexposing children online
Encourage responsible content creation practices
Why this matters
Children deserve to grow up in a safe environment—both offline and online. Social media platforms must not become spaces where their innocence is compromised, or where they are unintentionally used to influence audiences.
We urge policymakers, regulatory bodies, and social media companies to prioritize child safety, transparency, and accountability immediately.
