Protect children from known domestic abuse risks and parental alienation

The Issue

I have lived through the devastating consequences of a systemic failure to protect children from domestic abuse, even when clear patterns are documented. Despite numerous reports indicating ongoing abuse, my experiences were minimized, and the abusive parent retained control. Authorities disbelieved, excluded, and labelled me, ignoring the evident risks, and leaving me to endure years of unnecessary trauma. Unfortunately, this lack of protective measures is not just my story but a recurring failure in our society.

Domestic abuse is insidious, and its effects on children are profound and long-lasting. Numerous studies have shown that children exposed to domestic violence are at risk of developing emotional, psychological, and behavioral problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. Yet, without criminal convictions, protective actions are often not taken until it is too late. This gap in our legal and social systems fails the most vulnerable—children who are unable to advocate for themselves.

The current system often requires a criminal conviction before taking protective actions, overlooking obvious risks just because they haven't yet materialized into something legally punishable. This approach neglects the needs and safety of children, perpetuates the cycle of abuse, and causes additional suffering to those who are already victims.

There needs to be a change. I urge lawmakers, child protection services, and family courts to prioritize the safety and well-being of children. Implement structured policies that allow for intervention when there is a clear documented pattern of abuse, even in the absence of criminal convictions. Train professionals involved in child welfare to recognize and act upon these patterns early, ensuring that children are not at risk.

Additionally, establish community support networks for non-abusing parents and children to provide the necessary emotional and psychological support to rebuild their lives. By focusing on prevention and early intervention, we can ensure that children grow up in safe environments, free from the threat of domestic violence.

I am speaking out to protect others from the pain I endured and to ensure that no child or parent has to navigate the system alone or be trapped in cycles of abuse when patterns are clearly visible. Join me in calling for an urgent overhaul of our approach to domestic abuse patterns.
