The Issue

We, the undersigned — parents, guardians, and concerned citizens — urge UK leisure centres, gyms, and swimming facilities to implement clear policies that prevent full adult nudity in shared changing areas used by children.

In many public facilities, it's become common for adults to fully undress in communal changing rooms, often in the presence of children. This practice can cause discomfort and distress to young people, who may not be accustomed to such exposure in family or educational settings. Parents strive to teach their children about personal boundaries and respect for others; however, these lessons are undermined when public spaces do not uphold similar standards.

We believe that shared changing areas should promote a family-friendly environment where all users feel safe and respected. Therefore, we call for the following measures:

Mandatory Use of Modesty Towels or Coverings: Adults should be required to use towels or appropriate coverings when changing in communal areas.

Clear Signage: Facilities should display signs reminding patrons to maintain modesty and be considerate of others, especially children.

Availability of Private Changing Options: Centres should provide sufficient private or family changing rooms to accommodate those who prefer or require more privacy.

Staff Training: Employees should be trained to handle situations involving inappropriate exposure sensitively and effectively.

By implementing these measures, we can ensure that leisure centres remain welcoming and respectful spaces for all members of the community.
