Protect Children from Homes with Pending Heinous Crimes

Protect Children from Homes with Pending Heinous Crimes
The Issue
Melissa Mogle, a sweet and innocent 5-year-old, was tragically failed by the State of Florida. Her family, who loved her dearly, is now faced with the heartbreak of planning her funeral. Missy was in a safe and loving environment with family until her mother, through manipulation of the Department of Children and Family Services and the courts, regained custody. This led to a situation where Missy, along with her siblings, was stuck in a home with her stepfather, Daniel Spencer, who was guilty of a heinous crime, and where she suffered malnutrition.
It's time to ensure no child suffers the same fate. A child should never be placed into a home with a pending heinous crime, even if the biological parent is involved. Children are the epitome of innocence and deserve the utmost protection from such detrimental environments. Current policies and procedures failed Missy by allowing her to be placed in a dangerous and unhealthy environment.
There are urgent actions we can take to protect our children better. We call for stricter investigation protocols for child placement cases where there are pending heinous crime charges against household members. Additionally, transparency in the court and child services decision-making process must be enhanced to ensure children's safety is the absolute priority.
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, in 2021 alone, over 600,000 children were abused or neglected. Statistics like these should be a wake-up call that stringent measures are necessary. We cannot sit idly by and allow more children to become tragic statistics.
We urge for a policy review and immediate implementation of stronger safety controls concerning child placement practices across all states. Our children rely on us to safeguard their futures. Let's honor Missy's memory by ensuring her story is not repeated.
Please join us in demanding reforms that prioritize children's lives and health above all else. Sign this petition to prevent another tragedy like Missy's from happening again.
