The Issue

Our friends in Dalton Gardens, especially those near Canfield Mountain, have already faced two fire-related incidents that could have endangered many homes. Unsparingly, lax enforcement of international fire and building codes has exposed this serene mountain community to potential catastrophe.

The current regulations have permitted the construction of new homes on Canfield Mountain, an area of visceral wildfire threats. Reports suggest that wildfire incidents have substantially increased worldwide, with residential areas located near forests at high risk [source: National Fire Protection Association]. Even more concerning, 58% of the civilian deaths from 2007 to 2011 in the US were due to structure fires in homes [source: NFPA].

By strictly enforcing international fire and building codes, the risk of such devastating incidents can be significantly mitigated. These stringent regulations would ensure that new homes are equipped with proper fire suppression systems and built using materials that resist fire spread. Additionally, these codes prioritize safe evacuation pathways and set a safe distance between the built environment and potential fire sources.

Call on our county officials to prioritize the safety of Dalton Gardens and Canfield Mountain citizens. Ask them to enforce international fire and building codes to prevent devastating wildfires and ensure new homes built on Canfield Mountain are designed with our safety and preservation in mind. Please sign the petition to protect our community and forest.
